European Commission says UK must do more to set out debt reduction plans

The announcement today by the European Commission that the UK must do more to set out its plans with regards debt reduction plans is a heavy blow for Gordon Brown’s credibility.

The Conservatives have been arguing that we need to reduce our record budget deficit more quickly in order to support the recovery. Our argument is backed by credit rating agencies, business leaders, international investors and now the European Commission. That is why we need a change of government to restore confidence in our economy at home and abroad.

Commenting Cllr Andy Morgan, Conservative Parliamentary Candidate for Bolton South East,  said  “David Cameron and the Conservative Treasury Team having been saying for some time that we’ve got to be straight with people about what needs to be done.”

“We have always said more than the Government on the details of spending cuts and we will go on saying more. We will set out more details after the Budget and before the election.  The choice facing the Chancellor at the Budget is between honesty and dishonesty.”

“Whoever forms the next government is going to have to take some difficult decisions about spending and Alistair Darling should be upfront about the nature of those decisions. At the moment, we still have the Prime Minister going around saying it’s a choice between investments and cuts, that is just a dishonest approach to British politics.”
