Where we stand: National Security Council

Today the Conservative Party have set out our plans for a National Security Council.  By creating a new National Security Council we will learn the lessons from the Iraq War, replacing sofa Government with a co-ordinated approach to 21st Century threats.

An end to sofa Government:  We will set up a formal National Security Council, which will have a 21st Century approach to the 21st Century threats. Chaired by the Prime Minister, it will serve as a de facto War Cabinet while our forces are engaged in Afghanistan.

No more dodgy dossiers: The Prime Minister will determine whether intelligence assessments should or should not be published. But Political Advisers will not be permitted to change intelligence assessments, and any publication of an assessment should only be done by the Joint Intelligence Committee (JIC), with the express clearance and approval of the JIC.

More diplomacy, more prevention:  Our plans will mean that a future British Government will exercise more diplomacy and other preventative action to reduce the need for military intervention.
