New Unemployment Rates Published

The number of people unemployed in the UK rose again in the three months to September.  Unemployment totalled 2.46 million in the quarter, said the Office for National Statistics (ONS). The jobless rate edged up to 7.8% from 7.7%.

However, the youth unemployment rate rose to 19.8%, a record high.

The number of people claiming unemployment benefit rose by 12,900 to 1.64 million in October.

These are yet more grim figures for Britain. Labour have let down a generation of young people with the youth unemployment rate hitting a record high. One in five young people now can't find a job.

Behind the headlines there are also concerning statistics that more and more people are giving up looking for a job altogether, with economic inactivity at record rates and the number of Incapacity Benefit claims rising.

Labour need to take up Conservative  plans to Get Britain Working as a matter of urgency. In particular, they need to offer more support to young people by taking up our proposals to create hundreds of thousands of additional apprenticeships and training places to prevent a generation being written off because of Gordon Brown's recession.
