European Election Results

Following success in the local elections, we were pleased with our results in the European elections.  We came first, increased our vote share and were thirteen per cent ahead of Labour.  We won almost as many votes as Labour and the Lib Dems combined; we’re the only party with an MEP in every region; we topped the polls in every English region apart from the North East; we beat Labour in Wales for the first time ever; and we now have six women Conservative MEPs.

We fought a positive campaign, calling for a referendum on the renamed EU Constitution.  It’s clear that people want their say – Labour and the Lib Dems, who broke their promise of a referendum on the Constitution, won less than half the vote.

Labour suffered their worst post-war election result and were beaten into third place by UKIP.

The Liberal Democrats failed to make any real progress in these elections.  Although they gained an extra seat in the European Parliament, their share of the vote fell and in Wales they came in fifth place.

BNP won two seats, one in the North West and one in Yorkshire and the Humber

We deplore the election of BNP Members of the European Parliament.  The BNP thrives on hatred and division in our communities and their platform would be extremely destructive for Britain.  There were no BNP councillors in 1997 when Labour entered office.  Where the BNP gained MEPs, our vote held up while Labour’s vote collapsed.

UKIP failed to break through.  In spite of voters’ anger with the mainstream political parties over MPs’ expenses, UKIP gained just one extra seat and their share of the vote was unchanged.
